ALU and Lucerne University Bring Students Together for Swiss-Africa Business Case Exchange Programme

How do you prepare future leaders to navigate an increasingly interconnected world? By bringing together diverse perspectives, real-world business challenges, and collaborative learning.

This summer, ten students from the African Leadership University (ALU) joined ten students from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in Switzerland for the annual Swiss-Africa Business Case Exchange Programme, a five-day immersive summer school exploring sustainability, leadership, and cross-cultural collaboration.

Jointly designed and delivered by ALU and HSLU, the programme creates a space for emerging leaders from Africa and Switzerland to exchange ideas, build relationships, and tackle challenges relevant to both regions.

Before arriving in the programme’s host city of Lucerne, students also spent time exploring Zurich, gaining insight into Switzerland’s culture, history, and innovation ecosystem while connecting with peers in a new academic environment.

Tackling Real-World Business Challenges

At the heart of the programme was a collaborative business case centred on a resource extraction company operating across Africa and Europe. Working in mixed teams, students explored the sustainability, leadership, and communication challenges that arise when businesses, governments, communities, and investors balance competing priorities.

Throughout the week, participants researched the case, analyzed stakeholder perspectives, and developed practical recommendations before taking part in a final negotiation exercise. Representing five stakeholder groups, students worked towards a unanimous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), strengthening their ability to negotiate, build consensus, and make decisions in complex environments.

Faculty and guest speakers complemented the experience with sessions on sustainability, strategy, impact assessment, and negotiation, connecting classroom theory with real-world practice.

Learning Across Cultures

The programme extended well beyond the case study. By working alongside peers from different countries, educational systems, and cultural backgrounds, students strengthened their cross-cultural communication skills while learning from different perspectives and approaches to leadership.

These shared experiences encouraged participants to challenge assumptions, navigate unfamiliar viewpoints, and build relationships that extend beyond the classroom.

Building Global Leaders

The Swiss-Africa Business Case Exchange Programme reflects ALU’s approach to experiential learning, where global collaboration is combined with practical application and real-world problem-solving.

As Africa and Europe continue to deepen their economic and social ties, programmes like this help prepare future leaders to work across cultures, sectors, and borders. By combining academic learning with international collaboration, students leave better equipped to navigate complexity, build meaningful partnerships, and create lasting impact in the communities they serve.
