#LeadershipIs: Q&A with Yawa Hansen-Quao, Founder of Leading Ladies’ Network

What is your definition of leadership?

Leadership is the ability to make things happen while empowering others with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to do the same.

What will you say are the attributes of a good leader?

A good leader sees opportunity where others see problems and perseveres against considerable odds.

What motivates you to work for people?

I’m motivated by human potential–knowing that there lies locked in each of us seeds of greatness and an ideas that could potentially change the world.

What are your considerations when creating strategy for change?

For me, it is start with what is already working and innovate on that. In every situation, something works.

What makes you satisfied that your efforts have been worthwhile?

Achieving what we set out to do, when I expand my knowledge or skills base. When we have positive feedback from beneficiaries.

Who are your African (women) leadership icons?

Her Excellency Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

What legacy would you like to leave?

I wanted to have contributed to the advancement of African women as leaders across the continent.

How do leaders allow themselves to be led?

Surround themselves with people smarter than they are. Being humble enough to recognize areas in which they lack wisdom, and allow others who are gifted in that area to shine.

How do/should leaders accept they are wrong?

Be quick to admit when you’re wrong, and be quick to celebrate when others are right or do right.
