Millennials in the Workplace: The Future of Work

Elizabeth Wamaitha Mwangi and Farai Peter Munjoma share their experiences participating in a panel discussion on the role of Millennials in the workplace.

As part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week at ALC Mauritius, Elizabeth Mwangi and Farai Munjoma had the opportunity to sit on a panel organised by MauBank at the Bank’s head office in Ébene, Mauritius. MauBank, one of the government-owned banks, currently runs a Leadership Club that aims to develop strong leaders across the bank by bringing together distinguished leaders from all over the island; and giving them a chance to interact and learn from each other.  Having previously accomplished several internships during their studies, the MauBank Leadership Club invited the two students to share more on their work experience as millennials and what they can expect the “Future of Work and Millennials” to look like. The Marketing team caught up with both students to hear more on their experience:

Elizabeth: Getting invited to sit on the panel held by the MauBank Leadership Club and share my experience as a young millennial was truly an honor. This opportunity provided me with a great chance to realize and acknowledge that organizations around the island and the world are constantly re-modeling the workplace to better accommodate incoming generations. The panel also provided me with a great opportunity to realize that the various internships we undergo here at ALU can be of great value to companies that seek to understand how millennials can shape workplace. Prior to this session, I had always heard of different stereotypical narratives that tend to define millennials as a generation which has become limited by its greatest invention: technology. However, participating on the panel and sharing my thoughts gave me a chance to understand that these so-called limitations that surround millennials can actually serve as the greatest asset that we, as millennials, can bring to the workplace. For instance, by getting to hear from one of the experts in the industry who sat with us on the panel, Ms Jennifer Webb de Comarmond (the current CEO of Adecco Group Mauritius), I was introduced to the concept of reverse-mentoring where incoming younger generations in the workplace work together with the previous generations to bridge any existing gaps, exchange knowledge and skill sets, and thereby drive the company forward. In knowing that millennials are shaping the future of work, I can say that the panel left me with an even deeper intrinsic motivation to not only contribute more significantly in my various internships but to also constantly echo the great advantages millennials have to offer. I am grateful to MauBank for the opportunity and the efforts they are putting in place to better understand how millennials could shape the future of work.

 

Farai: As someone that is interested in the future of education and how the education system fits into the world of work, this was a good opportunity to learn about what industry experts demand from students coming into the workplace. For a young African like me, I have noticed trends of brain-drain and people moving from the continent to work in other parts of the world where they can probably earn more and find better employment opportunities.  It was fascinating to learn that these people can no longer be considered as lost manpower. The collaborative nature of the internet and technology, we can now allow for virtual work. This paradigm shift from brain drain to brain mobility is a new way young people in the world can contribute to their economies by virtually working and completing tasks. One of the key new trends in the workplace involves flexibility, there’s now a need for flexibility of time, responsibility and location. Employers are looking for more efficient and convenient models that can allow their employees to achieve work fulfilment and satisfaction. Working from home is now an option in many different countries and the Mauritian government has put forward tax deduction legislation for companies that have employees working from home. Through insights from world-renowned HR firm, Adecco, this event shade much light on the future that both employees and employers are looking to co-create. Model employers such as Maubank are setting a good example in the banking industry and taking the lead in democratising the conversation around how best the workplace can be reimagined. This was indeed a life-changing opportunity.
