Excellence at Scale: ALU Launches First Hub

11 February 2022:

The African Leadership University (ALU) is launching its first hub partnership with Nairobi’s Bao Box café on Monday, February 14, 2022 as part of its goal to increase accessibility and affordability to a world-class education across the African continent.

Last year, the African Leadership University (ALU) published its five-year strategy to educate a generation of ethical and entrepreneurial leaders for the continent and the world. ALU’s direction is driven by three essential pillars: accessibility; missions, not majors; and learning through doing. These pillars demand new and innovative approaches to traditional models of education that enable students to primarily learn within their communities and face-to-face with real-world challenges.

The hub model was specifically designed to facilitate social learning, peer to peer work, and community building within close proximity to communities. It allows for situated learning and mission-driven learning in which young leaders have the opportunity to engage with local industry experts, and visiting faculty. Our students will have the chance to solve real-life community problems and see the global challenges and opportunities in action. With spaces taking many different shapes and sizes, the hub ecosystem will serve a key role in terms of accessibility as students are guaranteed to find access to electricity, internet, and community within their walls.

Thus, ALU is delighted to announce its partnership with Bao Box in Nairobi, Kenya where the first hub will be brought to life beginning on Monday, February 14, 2022. Bao Box is East Africa’s premier board game café located within the Westlands neighborhood of Nairobi. It offers a novel hospitality business with a focus on showcasing Africa’s rich culture as well as creating a safe space where individuals can connect.

“We are definitely excited to be partnering with not only future leaders in the African landscape, but also with an institution that has a track record of producing them. Our ethos has always been to try and support the local economy as much as possible and this falls in line with that,” stated Vishesh Sonigra, Bao Box’s Marketing and Partnerships Director.

This is the first of many hubs to be launched across the continent. In addition to Nairobi, other priority locations for the first quarter of 2022 include Lagos, Nigeria and Accra, Ghana.
