The Queen’s Young Leaders Award was awarded to ALC student, Alex Mativo from Kenya for leading change and working to solve pertinent problems in his community.
The award was established in 2015 to discover, celebrate and support exceptional young people across the British Commonwealth who are creating positive impact in their communities.
Mativo was recognised for founding E-lab, a start-up that aims to reduce electronic waste in Africa by making art, fashion and other innovative products out of it.
“I think the best advice I ever got growing up was ‘stay hungry, stay focused’. Winning the Queen’s Young Leaders Award has left me more driven, passionate and hungry for success than I have ever been. I am glad that I am able to positively impact society at the highest level,” he said.
Two more ALC students, Elizabeth Kitange from Tanzania and Carryl Masibo from Kenya, also emerged as runner-ups. African Leadership College (ALC) is ALU’s founding campus in Mauritius. Learn more about the award here.
