Programme Overview

What is AIIP?

AIIP is the Africa Industrial Internet Programme, a post-graduate programme developed by the African Leadership University (ALU) with support and sponsorship from General Electric (GE). The Industrial Internet is the digital transformation in industrial companies brought about by the convergence of application development, industrial big data, Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning enabled by the cloud. This digital transformation creates a skills gap which the AIIP plans to solve by developing industrial data scientists who will build applications on the cloud that unlock the power of industrial big data to improve operational efficiency, cut costs and increase revenue for their businesses.

Who is AIIP for?

AIIP is for individuals looking to pioneer innovations in the industrial internet, enhance their skills and advance their careers by learning how to take full advantage of industrial big data to influence the bottom line of their business.

How many participants will be accepted into the programme?

The programme is expecting to enroll 80 participants.

What is the expected programme start date?

The programme will start in January 2018.

How long is the programme?

AIIP is a one year programme.

Where will the in-person intensives be held?

The in-person intensives will be held at GE Africa Innovation Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Curriculum & Learning

Is the AIIP a full-time programme?

The AIIP is designed to enable professionals to seamlessly continue working as they learn. For this reason, most of the learning content is delivered online through a personalized self-paced approach coupled with engaging 3-5 day in-person intensives to consolidate learning.

Is there an exam to clear at the end of the programme?

The AIIP is designed using a project-based approach where participants get to apply their learning in real world contexts. There will be regular assessments in each module culminating with a final project where participants will be tasked with applying their learning to solve an existing problem either in their business or in a partner organization’s business operations.

What is the deadline of my application?

The round one application deadline is October 31st, 2017 and the round two deadline is November 30th, 2017. We encourage you to apply early to secure a seat in the programme. We strongly recommend applying in the 1st Round if you wish to secure a GE scholarship.

When will I find out if I have been admitted?

Admission decisions will be issued on a rolling basis. You can expect to receive a decision within a month of your application round deadline.

What is the eligibility criteria to enroll for AIIP?

Participants are required to:

Have a quantitative background(engineering, mathematics/statistics) or IT/ computing background

Other desired attributes include:

      1. Being recent graduates or professionals in the following industries: Oil and Gas, Power generation and distribution, Manufacturing, Transportation
      2. Basic business acumen particularly in engaging clients
      3. Familiarity with Python coding
      4. Strong analytical and statistical reasoning skills
      5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills

What is the minimum academic grade required to apply for this programme?

There is no minimum academic grade required. Your academic credentials is one of several components which will be considered in reviewing your application.

Do I need to be an engineer to apply for this programme?

No, you do not need to be an engineer to apply for AIIP. However, a quantitative background is required given the modules are focused on application of skills like analytics and application development through a project-based learning approach.

Fees & Funding

How much does the programme cost?

The total cost of tuition for the programme is US$ 9,000*. This includes access to all online content, learning materials, virtual laboratories and real-time support. It also covers all in-person sessions held at GE’s Innovation Center in Johannesburg, South Africa.

*It does not cover cost of transport to, or accommodation during the in-person sessions.

Do you provide scholarships?

GE is offering a limited number of scholarships for the 2018 AIIP cohort of participants. To apply for the scholarship, simply indicate your interest in the application form and submit an essay telling us why you think we should consider you for the scholarship.

Is there an application fee?

No, there is no application fee.

What certification will be provided to participants upon completion?

The AIIP is a post-graduate certificate programme that will be accredited in South Africa.

What institution will offer the AIIP certification programme?

The AIIP is offered by the African Leadership University in collaboration with General Electric

What kinds of jobs can I do after completing this programme?

The AIIP will equip you to work in any data-rich environment across industries and enable you to add value by developing a data-driven decision making approach to business operations. Post-AIIP, you can continue working focused on specific verticals in analytics, industrial IoT, or further your studies in machine learning or application development on the cloud. The intrapreneurship skills will prepare you to lead innovation across functions such as asset maintenance, supply chain management and plant operations that will impact the bottom line of your business.
