Khurram Masood

Head of College, Mauritius

As ALU’s Founding Chief Operating Officer, Khurram is also Head of College for the Mauritius campus. Alongside being a former Associate Partner at McKinsey, he also holds a degree in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University in the United States.

Veda Sunassee

Head of College, Rwanda

Originally from Mauritius, Veda’s journey with ALU started as Director of Student Life for the Mauritius campus. He also headed recruiting efforts at the African Leadership Academy as their Leadership and Entrepreneurship faculty member. Veda holds a Political Science degree from Princeton University in the United States.

Seth Trudeau

Director of Learning

Seth leads a team that designs learning ecosystems and experiences for developing ethical, impactful leaders. 

He began his career teaching history in the US before founding an NGO in South Sudan working with orphans and vulnerable children. With a Masters degree from Stanford University in Learning, Design, and Technology and a Bachelors from the University of Denver in International Relations, he has also worked with Dr. Candace Thille on the Open Learning Initiative and designed programs for training surgeons in the developing world using the Open edX platform.


Kwasi Adi-Dako

Leadership Core Team Lead

As an inaugural faculty member with ALU in Johannesburg back in 2014, Kwasi’s passions straddled professional development, mentoring and coaching, and engagement with African cultural and social development. as a curriculum designer and facilitator.

Before joining the team, Kwasi worked as an analyst with Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo, as well as teaching debate, public speaking and mathematics as part of Youth For Debate, a 501-3c organization focused on building speaking skills in middle and high schools all over New York. He is originally from Ghana and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in Psychology and Business Management.


Yusuf Ahmad

Degree Programmes Lead

Leading learning experience design, learning model innovation, and academic operations across ALU’s Degree Programmes, Yusuf joined ALU after a fellowship at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Prior to Carnegie, he worked for the President of the American University in Cairo (AUC) in the years following the Egyptian revolution. During his time at AUC, he authored the university’s enrollment strategy, redesigned admissions, and co-developed a $450,000 project to enhance civic engagement in universities across the Middle East and North Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies from Columbia University in New York, United States.

Laurel Staab

Director of Faculty, Rwanda

Laurel first joined ALU as the Faculty Development Lead on the Mauritius campus, where she helped fast track faculty skill development, and designed and implemented a full 10-week English immersion curriculum.

Prior to ALU, she studied at Stanford University in the United States, where her research focused on distribution of school resources and academic achievement across socioeconomic status in Cuba and the Dominican Republic. She’s also taught history in the Rio Grande Valley through Teach for America. Her undergraduate research at Vassar College focused on the role of women’s social movements during and after the Sandinista government in Nicaragua.

Edward Opoku

Campus: Mauritius
Education: Ashesi University, Ghana
Country: Ghana

After graduating from Ashesi, Edward went on to work there as Faculty Intern, facilitating courses like Quantitative Methods and Operations Management. His passion lies in understanding how information across the continent is shaping the decisions being made. This was enhanced during the time he worked at a corporate data analytics company, Asoko Insight.

Michael Gebre Yntiso

Education: Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia
Country: Ethiopia

A graduate of ALU’s inaugural Fellow Programme, Michael has previously worked as an analyst for The Ethiopian Agriculture Transformation Agency, where he engaged with various stakeholders such as the Prime Minster of Ethiopia, to local farmers throughout the country. He has also worked as the Regional Financial Coordinator for Aisosh Ethiopia, a charity organisation supporting tertiary education expenses for students from low-income families.

Wilhelmina Efua Zwennes

Country: Ghana

While studying towards a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and minor in Mathematics, Wilhelmina gained first-hand scientific research experience as a Tech Consultant. Prior to joining ALU, Wilhelmina was an online Physics and Mathematics tutor for Chegg, an online education platform based in the States, where she tutored high school and college students in a range of topics. She is passionate about the power of data in gaining insights to make data-based decisions.

Communicating for Impact

Efemena Odu

Campus: Mauritius
Education: Columbia University, US
Country: Nigeria

Driven to support Africa’s young people in becoming confident communicators, curious readers, critical and creative thinkers, and service-minded citizens, Efemena gained her first formal education experience teaching health classes to New York City high-schoolers. Holding a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Political Science, she has also worked in mainstream and academic publishing and was the website and online services manager for a library NGO serving community schools and prisons in her home city of Lagos.

Tofik Saad

Campus: Mauritius
Education: South Bank University, UK
Country: UK

Tofik discovered his love for teaching later in his professional career, while working as a Project Analyst for American Express he joined a language exchange program. What started as a hobby, became a passion that has taken him from England to South Korea and now, Mauritius. Alongside a degree in Business Information Technology, he is also an Associate Fellow of Higher Education with a post-experience certificate in Supporting Learning and Student Engagement.

Zinhle Mkhabela

Campus: Mauritius
Education: Wits University, South Africa
Country: South Africa

A member of ALU’s inaugural Fellow Programme, Zinhle previously worked as a Candidate Attorney at Adams and Adams, and is trained in trade mark and copyright litigation. She has also worked with several youth development initiatives in South Africa. She holds BA, LLB and Masters degrees with distinction in Law and International Relations. Upon receiving the D.H. Miller Memorial Endowment for African Studies Award, she was able to attend the George Washington University as a graduate exchange student.

Sila Ogidi

Campus: Rwanda
Education: Bryn Mawr College, US
Country: Nigeria and Turkey

During her years studying towards a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature, Sila interned at Google as a Business Intern and spent summers volunteering at a local nursery and primary school in Lagos, designing curriculum and training teachers. Prior to relocating to Rwanda, she worked as copywriter and content creator on ALU’s Marketing team. She has also worked in education as a teacher in a Montessori school in Lagos, Nigeria. She has a deep appreciation of the impact a positive learning experience in shaping futures of young Africans.

Cassandra Ndahiro

Campus: Rwanda
Education: Nebraska Wesleyan, US
Country: Rwanda and Finland

Passionate about communication and youth development, Cassandra was the team lead of the Yale Young African Scholars Program, which provided scholars with multiple professional development workshops. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Global Studies, where she worked as a Teaching Assistant for the “Rwanda Through Film and Literature”. Prior to ALU, Cassandra worked at Imbuto Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by the First Lady of Rwanda, Jeannette Kagame, as part of the Youth Empowerment and Mentorship Program.

Entrepreneural Leadership

Katleho Mohono

Campus: Mauritius
Education: Wits University, South Africa
Country: South Africa

Facilitator and coach, with a passion for youth and leadership development, Katleho has worked within ALU in a diverse set of roles, most notably as a Student Life Associate, where he designed and pioneered ALU’s signature student wellness program, ALUAlive, and leading the set up of its arts programme – Arts @ ALU. He holds a double major degree in Organisational Psychology and Human Resource Management.

Tolu Agunbiade

Campus: Mauritius
Education: University of Abuja, Nigeria
Country: Nigeria

With a degree in Accounting and over five years of experience working in the technology sector with organisations such as Nokia, Co-creation Hub Nigeria and Meltwater, Tolu has a penchant for entrepreneurial initiatives and htis resonates as she is the cofounder of Skrife, an online platform that creates original written content for brands and businesses through a curated community of high quality freelance writers and editors.

Emmanuel Agbeko Gamor

Campus: Mauritius
Education: University of Florida, US
Country: Ghana

As the former Director of Digital and Design Innovation at Impact Hub Accra and curator of the Global Shapers Accra Community of the World Economic Forum, Emmanuel has been a founder and partner of social enterprises and private ventures across Africa. He’s previously worked with Google and YouTube, and projects with Nestle, Millicom, Ecobank and Samsung. A Political Science, Photojournalism and Leadership graduate, he is also a member of the inaugural class of Harvard Business School’s SEPA 2016 program.

Julia Paolillo

Campus: Rwanda
Education: Middlebury College, US
Country: US

With a keen interest in the intersection of entrepreneurship and leadership, Julia started her journey on the continent with a gap year in 2010 with the African Leadership Academy. Since then, she has pursued entrepreneurship in the liberal arts as a participant in Middlebury College’s MiddCORE program, a boot camp for young social entrepreneurs, and at the Global Scholars Program in South Africa, where she served as Assistant Director. She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in African Studies, Political Science, and Arabic.

Carmen Attikossie

Campus: Rwanda
Education: Catherine’s University, US
Country: Togo

A Gilman scholar, Carmen has interned at Mary’s Pence, an organisation funding economic development projects for women in Latin America and Haiti, and volunteered at Future Leaders, that provides free primary education to children who are unable to access the public school system in Ghana. Prior to joining ALU, Carmen founded Cartik, that works with artisans in Ghana and Togo to create accessories made from African textiles to promote African culture among the African diaspora in the United States. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with a minor in French.

Demilade Oluwasina

Campus: Rwanda
Education: Obafemi Awolowo, Nigeria
Country: Nigeria

A Microsoft Innovative Education Expert and a BUILD-certified entrepreneurial leadership educator, Demilade holds a Bachelors of Animal Science and advanced certificates from Daystar Leadership Academy, Nigeria. Prior to joining ALU in Rwanda, he was the Program Manager for The Bridge Program, Nigeria, a non-governmental university-to-work transition programme providing employment and entrepreneurship skills as well as mentorship and support for undergraduates across Nigerian universities.


Shana-Michelle Rabonda

Country: South Africa

Passionate about women empowerment and working to uplift youth, Shana-Michelle is the founder of a mentorship programme focused on education and personal development for female high-school students. With a degree in Computer Science and Honours in Information Systems, she has worked in the information technology and security consulting sector. She is currently pursuing an LLB degree, hoping to combine her passion for education, women empowerment and the law in the near future.

Persis Merab Ashers

Campus: Rwanda
Education: US International Univ., Kenya
Country: Kenya

Keen on topics such entrepreneurship, youth, talent development and corporate governance in Africa, Persis is a founder of the afriQuest Research Centre and the Akilah Girls Leadership Academy, for which she has been recognised as a Mandela Washington Fellow, a Vital Voices Grow Fellow and a Babson Fellow under it’s Women Executive Education Program. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations, Persis worked in project management for Nielsen, Microsoft and Triggerise, and in 2012 co-founded a Sub-Saharan market research firm that currently has operational bases in Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Lagos.

Rushika Jayprakash Pattni

Country: Tanzania

A firm believer in the power of data and technology to help make evidence-based decisions, Rushika has previously worked as a Strategy and Technology Consultant for Vera Solutions, an International Partner of Salesforce Foundation. While there, she implemented projects in South Asia, East and Southern Africa, including design and management of online technology platforms for global, as well as local grassroots organisations in the education and public health sector. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and History of Science, Medicine and Public Health.

English Immersion and Signature Experiences

Kevin Rugamba

Campus: Rwanda
Education: University of Penn, US
Country: Uganda

As lead facilitator for the English Immersion Programme on the Rwanda campus, Kevin’s passion for education came about after a summer internship experience in Ghana. He wrote his senior thesis that explored education policy in East Africa towards his Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with minors in French and African Studies. He is keen about contributing to increasing the confidence and profitability of African creative industries.
