5 Things to do at ALC Mauritius

In this post, we highlight 5 activities our students engage in outside of class on campus and around Mauritius.

One of our two remarkable campuses is the African Leadership College located in Pamplemousses, about 15 minutes drive from Port Louis, the capital city of Mauritius. It is a fully residential campus overlooking the sugarcane fields which currently houses over 350 students. One thing a future student probably wants to know before getting to campus is to learn about the fun things to do on campus and around Pamplemousses or even around Mauritius in general. This article will explain what students are doing and other fun activities they have been participating in outside of class. This article is meant to inspire future and new students on what to do and where and how to have fun around campus and in Mauritius.

Playing Sports and Participating in Dance Sessions

Playing sports is one of the most common things to do at ALC Mauritius. Soccer is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports at ALC Mauritius which is being played by males and females alike. Usually, students have the opportunity to play soccer every Tuesdays and Fridays at Northfields, however, there are opportunities for students to also play soccer at any other time of the week. Other sports available include volleyball, basketball and frisbee. Regular fitness training organized by students is also common and a number of students participate in it. Dance is also very popular as some students take the initiative to come together every other week for a refreshing time dance to contemporary music. The exciting thing about the ALC community is that people take ownership of their lives. Hence, if you feel inspired by your passion for a particular sport you want to play or something else that you want to do, but is not readily available on routine, just do it! People that are equally passionate will join.

Shopping at Grand Baie

For most tourists, Grand Baie is the place to be. It is home to nice beaches, resorts, and spas as well as two of the most popular malls in Mauritius– Super U and La Croisette. Usually, ALC students go there to buy things they need ranging from toiletries to food. While students have the option to catch the public bus to go to Grand Baie for shopping, there is always a bus leaving from campus to Grand Baie every Tuesdays and Fridays for students who would like to go there. In addition, students also have the opportunity to go to the beach, relax and enjoy the cool breeze of the evening or even swim at the beach if they want to.

Game Nights

Oftentimes, Student Life which consists of ALC staff and Residential Advisors comes up with brilliant ideas of having game nights where students can come together and play board games like chess, scrabble, monopoly and other types of board games. This is done in the spirit of unwinding and unplugging from academic work as a result of the rigorous workload that students go through. In addition, some students who are FIFA lovers also take the initiative to organize FIFA game nights/tournaments. There is no specific period designated for this, hence, students usually just take the initiative to do something they derive fun in doing.

Movie Nights

Movie Nights are a great way to bond with friends and create long-lasting memories. Again, while Student Life comes up with a movie night idea, students also take the initiative to organize a movie night with their friends in their respective rooms.

Sightseeing at the Botanical Gardens

The African Leadership University Mauritius campus is located in Pamplemousses, home to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden is very famous in Mauritius and it is home to some Deers and giant Aldabra tortoises who are said to be from Seychelles. There are lots of flowers as well including the lotus flower and giant water lilies. Going to the botanical gardens to see these the beauty of nature is just one of the fun things to do in Mauritius.
